PILLANS POINT PRIMARY SCHOOL.
Pillans Point School is a contributing primary school catering for students in Year 1 – 6. The school is an urban school located in Tauranga City. Recent upgrading of school facilities has included a new library, renovated resource rooms and classroom refurbishing. Buildings and grounds are attractive, well maintained and provide a pleasant and practical learning environments for children and teachers.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL
The school was opened on 27th May, 1957.
At present it is a decile 9, grade U5 school with a roll ranging between 370-400 pupils and having a staffing entitlement of 19 teachers.
The ethnic composition of the school comprises ninety one percent European pupils, the remaining nine percent being predominantly of Maori descent.
Our primary purpose in partnership with parents and community is to encourage respect, self esteem and personal achievement in a quality learning environment. To provide a friendly, challenging school community which has high educational expectations and shared values where children develop knowledge, confidence and skills to succeed. We believe it is important that all our interactions, and in particular our teaching, are underpinned by values which can be supported by home and school.
The children are receiving a high quality education delivered by a team of committed teachers. The children are highly motivated and keen to learn. Positive and constructive interactions are evident among children and between teachers and children.
Standardised and diagnostic achievement information gathered by the school indicates that the children are achieving at or above national norms. The school places emphasis on literacy teaching and learning.
The school is well resourced with a range of up-to-date Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools. Children enjoy a high level of access to computer technology both in classrooms and in the school’s computer suite. Children are able to develop and practice research and presentation skills in meaningful learning contexts.
The staff is made up of experienced caring teachers who demonstrate professional attitudes toward achieving the schools vision and a number of very professional support staff – office staff, caretaking / cleaning staff and teacher aides.
Support agencies such as Group Special Education, Department of Health (hearing, vision, and health nurse), itinerant resource teachers and advisers, along with education officers within the Police and Ministry of Transport are utilised to meet the needs of the children.
The grounds and buildings comprise 1.9602 hectares of ground area which includes one field each for rugby, soccer, hockey as well as sealed areas providing one netball court and one basketball court. Buildings consist of two main teaching blocks of nine permanent classrooms, one block with one classroom, one block of four relocatable classrooms and one relocatable building used as a storage area for resource material and general storage. A separate building houses the hall, library, journal room and computer suite / reception classroom. The swimming pool complex includes changing sheds (with toilets) and filtration unit.
A large adventure playground is situated near the main playing field.
