Principals Welcome

Kia ora tatou katoa

It is my pleasure to welcome and introduce you to our school.

Originally to be called Otumoetai East School when it was first to be built, a submission from a local resident to the Auckland Education Board had the name changed to Pillans Point School, prior to its opening in 1957.

As a state integrated primary school, we cater for children in years 0-6. Set on nearly 2ha, we offer a modern library and hall, a 25m swimming pool, astroturf playing court and large field areas which includes a full size cricket wicket. Our 17 well equipped classrooms are attractive learning environments where children are encouraged to be courageous in their learning.

Our School has a very established culture within our community, where our expectations for learning and behaviour is high. Along with academic success we aim for our children to develop socially through our 'Learner Competencies'. These competencies have been designed and shaped to meet the needs of our students from our community. They are the competencies that we want children to develop and master as they move through our school from the age of five through to the end of year six.

We have a talented team of teaching and support staff who work together to create the best possible teaching and learning opportunities for our children. As part of our curriculum we offer specialist music in classrooms, iPads and other modern teaching and learning tools and a commitment to supporting success through our partnership with Sport Bay of Plenty and their fundamental skills programme. We are developing a strong culture around our school houses which children will be placed in from the day they start our school. Our houses create an across school, multi levelled group of children who can work towards house success together. All families will remain in the same house.

We also pride ourselves on our commitment to developing children's talents and passions. Adventure Time is part of our school week, that happens on Friday mornings . Adventure Time is an innovative programme that allows for further personalisation of learning across the curriculum. Adventure time caters for all students and gives them the opportunity to develop further our school learner attributes. It teaches the students how to be proactive in managing and taking responsibility for their learning. Learning opportunities in other areas such as learning a second language, creating a mural for the school, training for a sports or cultural event, and pursuing personal passions and interests are encouraged during this time.

As a school we welcome parents to take a full and active part in their child's learning. We encourage you to have open communication with your child's teacher and the school leadership team. Should at any stage you wish to discuss your child in relation to their schooling please do not hesitate to make contact with us.

Once again, we welcome you to our school.

Kind Regards

Matt Simeon Principal
