Hockey - Information and Registration


Fun Sticks – Yr 1 & 2’s 
This is an introduction to hockey, the aim being to develop hockey skills in a fun way, with a high level of participation and lots of small games.

Mini Sticks – Yr 3 & 4’s
This is a six a-side mixed gender game. Depending on the skills of the players the game can be played on an 1/8 field or 1/4 field format. Beginners and younger players normally play on the smaller field.

Kiwi Sticks – Yr 5 & 6’s 
This is a six a-side mixed gender game. Depending on the skills and age of the players they are graded, generally there are 8 grades, the top 4 grades playing on a 1/2 field format with penalty corners being included in the rules, the lower 4 grades playing on 1/4 field.

Umpires - All Mini & Kiwi sticks teams will need to provide an umpire for each game. There will be a Coaches/Umpire day on Saturday 2nd May which all umpires are required to attend.



Fun Sticks - played at Pillans Point School on Wednesday afternoons.

Mini Sticks – played at Tauranga Hockey Centre (THC) Blake Park, Mount Maunganui on Saturdays

Kiwi Sticks – The majority of games are played at Tauranga Hockey Centre (THC) Blake Park, but some are also played at schools around the area i.e. Bethlehem College, Aquinas College, Otumoetai Intermediate, Otumoetai College, Selwyn Ridge School, Tauranga Boys College, Te Puna School, Katikati College. All games are played on Saturdays.


Season Dates:

Fun Sticks - starting Wednesday 13th May, for 12 weeks. NO Sessions on the 8th or 15th July due to school holidays. Last session Wednesday 12th August.

Mini & Kiwi Sticks – Played on Saturdays starting on Saturday 9th May. There is a Coaches/Umpires day on Saturday 2nd May.  Season begins with 4 grading games, followed by 7 Championship games then the quarterfinals, semifinals & finals.  The season ends with a Prize-giving and Fun Games day on Saturday 5th September. (15 weeks overall)

There will be NO GAMES during school holidays i.e. Saturday 11th & 18th July.

Games WILL be played Queen's Birthday weekend.


Game Times:


Fun Sticks – Wednesdays afterschool at Pillans Point School 3.15pm - 4.15pm. 

NB: All players will need to be accompanied / supervised by a parent or caregiver.

Mini & Kiwi Sticks – Games are played on Saturday mornings sometime between 8.15pm – 1.30pm
(2 x 20 min halves per game, 5 minute half time). The draw will be posted on the THA website; it will be the responsiblity of the manager of the team to distribute game times and locations.

Practises will take place at school either at lunchtimes or before/after school, days and times to be confirmed by the Coach or Team Manager.



Fun Sticks (Yr 1 & 2’s) – $60 for a twelve week programme. This includes borrowing the equipment (sticks, goal posts etc) and the programme facilitator.
Mini Sticks (Yr 3 & 4’s) – $70 for a 15 week season.
Kiwi Sticks (Yr 5 & 6’s) – $70 for a 15 week season.



Fun Sticks – No sports uniform required, they just wear their school uniform. However, it is compulsory for all players to wear shin pads, a mouth guard and covered shoes. Sticks will be provided.

Mini Sticks & Kiwi Sticks - will need to wear the school sports uniform for their games. They will also be expected to have their own pair of navy knee high sports socks as part of the uniform. Children will need their own stick; and it is compulsory for all players to wear shin pads, a mouth guard and covered shoes.

The school sports uniform & socks can be purchased from the uniform shop on Monday and Friday mornings between 8.30am – 9.00am and Tuesday afternoons between 2.30pm and 3.00pm. If this isn’t convenient please contact Angela ( to make an alternative time.

Extra-curricular Sports Code of Conduct

Coaches hold the team practises and are present to coach during games. For Funsticks, this person becomes the Programme Facilitator; and delivers the Funsticks programme provided by Tauranga Hockey Association.

Managers are responsible for team logistics & organisation e.g. correspondence of practise and game times to all members of the team; key point of contact for PPS Sports & Events Co-ordinator.
These roles can be shared across parents if required. Without parents volunteering for these roles; we are unable to submit teams.
